In loving memory of Alan Benson MBE

Everyone at Transport for All is heartbroken by Alan Benson MBE's passing. Alan was an astounding campaigner and ambassador for the disabled community.

2023 ended on the saddest possible note with the death in December of our Co-Chair of Trustees, colleague and friend Alan Benson MBE.

Alan was an astounding campaigner and ambassador for the disabled community. We have received a huge number of messages from colleagues across the transport sector and disabled community, all of whom speak of Alan with fondness and respect.  We are fortunate that he guided us through some challenging times, and was there to celebrate our successes. All of us at Transport for All are committed to continuing Alan’s work to deliver transport justice. Our thoughts are with Yvonne, Alan’s family, and all who knew him.

A life of activism

Alan’s work has had a lasting impact not only on transport accessibility, but the entire disabled community. This was a result of his charisma and commitment, alongside a unique approach to diplomacy that was admired by so many. He leaves a legacy of successful campaigns, many of which were won behind-the-scenes, where he persuaded industry colleagues to adopt an inclusive approach to transport design.

In 2022, his incredible contributions were recognised in the New Year’s Honours list, in which he was awarded an MBE for services to Public Transport for Disabled People. To mark the occasion he told us about his proudest moments, successful campaigns, and his hopes for the future of transport.
