On Tuesday 24th April, Transport for All (TfA) will be joining the National Federation of the the Blind of the UK (NFBUK) along with other charities to petition Number 10 on the problems of shared space roads and the impact they are having on Disabled and older people, especially visually impaired people.

You are invited to join us.

When: Tuesday 24th April 2018 (see timing below)
Where: Outside Westminster at Old Palace Yard

The timing of the petition is to mark the first anniversary of the publication of the Women and Equalities Select Committee Report ‘Building for Equality – Disability and the Urban Environment’ which condemned the use of shared space roads; it called for the schemes to be halted, all existing schemes to be reviewed and modified, and for the underlying Guidance for shared space to be withdrawn and replaced with inclusive design guidance.

The Government’s recent response to the recommendations to the Women and Equalities Select Committee Report is simply not good enough and fails to address the concerns raised by the report. The petition asks for the urgent implementation of the recommendations made in the Women and Equalities Select Committee Report to bring a halt to shared spaces.

The timings for the Event are:

  • 11.00 – Start arriving at Old Palace Yard, Westminster.
  • 11.15 – Meet MPs, interested people in our campaign and hopefully the media.
  • 11.50 – Proceed to Number 10.
  • 12.00 – Number 10 to hand-in petitions.

NFBUK have asked the MPs from the Women and Equalities Select Committee and Transport Select Committee to join the protest. They are also encouraging participants to invite their MPs to join us. NFBUK produced a template letter that you can use (see below).

Template Letter for MPs

Your Right Hon,

I would be very grateful if you have a window of opportunity to meet with me and fellow campaigners, who will be outside Westminster to talk with you about the ongoing problems of shared space road design. It is the first year anniversary of the publication of the Women and Equalities Select Committee Report on ‘Building for Equality – Disability and the Urban Environment’ report which called for shared space road schemes to be halted, for all schemes to be reviewed and modified and the underlying guidance for shared space to be removed and replaced with inclusive Guidance. The recent response by the Government to the report is simply not good enough and we are requesting the full implementation of the Women and Equalities Select Committee Report recommendations on shared space.
The evidence submitted to the inquiry was overwhelming on the problems being faced by disabled people in the schemes and the ongoing discrimination blind, partially sighted and disabled pedestrians are facing in these schemes cannot be tolerated. Urgent action is required if we are to stop disabled people being designed out of their own high streets through poor urban design and to ensure existing schemes are audited and modified to allow independent access for all to their town and city centres.
There will be a number of petitions being handed in on the day to ask the Government to implement the recommendations of the Women and Equalities Select Committee Report and we wanted to give you an opportunity to find out more about why we felt we had to take this action. I really hope that you will have time to meet me and other campaigners from across the UK. Please find below, the times, I and fellow campaigners will be around Westminster and Number 10 if you can make it.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read our request and I hope to meet you shortly at Westminster.
Kindest regards
