Transport for All Urges the Government to act on Transport Committee findings

Transport for All is urging the Government to act on the findings of ‘Access Denied’ - the Transport Committee's report released this week on the laws around accessibility on transport and in our streets.
The report follows a comprehensive inquiry into the barriers disabled people face when travelling in the UK. The findings paint a damning picture: our community does not have equal access to any mode of transport, and equality laws are rarely enforced.
We agree with many of the report’s recommendations. We believe:
- Regulators must enforce accessibility more actively. Accessibility exemptions for transport companies should be stopped, as they allow discrimination against disabled people
- Passengers need one straightforward complaints service, whatever transport we’re using
- Transport companies must have a responsibility to put things right when they fail disabled people, so we don’t experience the same problems again and again, and
- There should be one regulator to enforce accessibility rules across all kinds of transport
The Government must act on these recommendations and apply concrete deadlines to achieving them. Transport companies who fail to act must be held accountable. Caroline Stickland, CEO of Transport for All said:
This report is a wakeup call for the Government to address transport accessibility and make sure the UK is a place for all of us.
