UPDATE – It is not too late to support the action. Our local members will held another event for petitioning at Northfields station on the 8th October, 3-7pm. All our members and supporters are invited. Please contact us if you are interested.

Transport for All (TfA) is supporting local members in Ealing, campaigning for Northfields Tube station to become fully accessible.

Transport for London (TfL) is investing £200 million to deliver step-free access for a number of Tube stations by 2022. By then over 100 Tube stations will be step-free, although this represents just 40% of the network.

But Northfields station is not on this programme of improvements. This is despite Northfields being one of the busiest Tube stations in suburban London. The latest figures show almost 4 million people exited or entered the station last year.

Access to the Northfields platforms is denied or at least extremely hazardous for those willing to tackle the stairs – if you are a wheelchair-user, on crutches, visually-impaired or for those with a buggy or heavy luggage.

TfL cites the high cost as the reason for omitting Northfields from its programme to make our Tube station step-free. But it has not carried out a full feasibility study to support its position.

TfA member, Susan New says “We believe that there is a compelling case for making Northfields station step-free given the numbers that use the station; its location next to the Northfields depot; its popularity by virtue of being in Zone 3; and its location by busy bus routes. It could be an easy route for people to get to Hammersmith and onward via a bus to Charing Cross & Hammersmith hospitals via lifts. There is also an interchange to the accessible Jubilee Line at Green Park. We, in West London, have waited decades for the same access to tube services as that of East London. It is time to rectify this.”

Take action to support Northfields members – Demonstration and Petition

TfL is about to consult on another investment programme to make more stations step-free; and we want to make sure that Northfields station is on this next phase and that step-free access to the station’s platforms is available as soon as possible.
