Alan Benson MBE, the Chair of Transport for All, who passed away in December 2023, has been awarded a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the Transport Times National Transport Awards.

Alan was a disabled rights campaigner who secured improvements to patient transport, and campaigned for restoration of Access for All funding to rail stations.

Despite these high profile successes, Alan maintained that many of his proudest achievements were won behind closed doors – from making systems change to become accessible to disabled people, to changing the attitudes of senior transport staff, to securing standard lift signage across the London Underground, making it easier for people to navigate.

Alan himself navigated Transport for All through the challenging start of the Covid pandemic, and later helped widen our work to include disabled people across the UK. He is much missed, loved and remembered.

Transport for All CEO Caroline Stickland presented Alan’s Lifetime Achievement Award to his wife Yvonne at a ceremony in London on 3rd October.

Caroline said:

“I cannot imagine a more fitting award for such an incredible person, Chair, and friend. Alan’s legacy is not only a more accessible transport system for every disabled person, but a network of disabled people who he helped to grow, encourage, and help succeed, myself included. We are indebted to him and will continue his work.”
