TfA’s celebratory cruise with Thames Clippers

Today I met a lady called Sandra who was diagnosed with MS three years ago. In that three years she was not able to use the bus, or the tube or the Thames clipper boat trip, today she did all three.

Transport for all and their members who use mobility scooters have campaigned hard for scooter users to be able to us Thames clipper boat trips up the Thames. So we all went to North Greenwich with four wheelchair users and two scooter users to celebrate!

We all crowded around the front of the boat, and Lianna cracked open a bottle a sparkling wine. The most magical part of the trip… Seeing Sandra’s face as we travelled down the Thames. With tears in her eyes she watched Tower Bridge come into view and it was like all her Christmases had come at once....she felt free and independent, and that scooter access card to use the boat was the most precious thing in the world to her.

While on the boat, I got a text to say Atos were not going to be doing the WCA contract from 2015, all the passengers on the boat must have wondered what on earth was going on at the front of the boat, as we cheered from Greenwich to Westminster.

We laughed, we cried, we hugged, and we enjoyed the breaks in the rain as the evening sun played on the water of the river’s been an afternoon I will not forget for a long time. I will never forget the sheer wonder of seeing London through Sandra’s eyes, because with that access card, she can get to parts of London she has never been to before and that is worth everything.
