Capital Call
Capital Call Service Information
Added: 15 January 2009 | Updated: 23 August 2010
Capital Call is a complementary service to Taxicard, and also provides subsidised door-to-door transport using minicabs.
It was introduced in response to a shortage of London taxis in certain boroughs. It currently operates in the London boroughs of Bexley, Ealing, Enfield, Haringey, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Kingston, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton and Southwark.
Capital Call is available to all registered Taxicard users and the criteria for membership are the same for both schemes. Capital Call is not intended to replace Taxicard, and members are free to make use of both services. However, in order to benefit from Capital Call you need to be a member of Taxicard.
If you are a Taxicard member, and wish to apply for Capital Call membership, you can obtain a Capital Call registration form by phoning them on 020 7275 2446, emailing capitalcall@hackneyct.org, or writing to them at the address given below.
You will then need to complete the form, photocopy your Taxicard membership card and post both form and photocopy to:
Transport Co-ordination, C/o HCT, Ash Grove Bus Depot, Mare Street, London E8 4RH
A waiting list system has recently been introduced, as the scheme is currently at capacity. We don’t have any information as to how long the average wait is likely to be, as the cap on membership only came into force in April 2009.
What are the benefits?
Capital Call members are given an annual travel ‘budget’ to spend on Capital Call travel. When you make a booking, capital call arranges for a local minicab firm to collect you.
Users pay a flat fare of £1.50 for anything up to £11.80. The remainder, in this case £10.30, is taken from a £200 per year budget allocated to each member by TfL. For any amount over £11.80, the member must pay £1.50 plus the difference.
Once the budget is used up, however, members will be unable to use the scheme until their budget is topped up again – something that happens each April. Members wishing to arrange a Capital Call trip are asked to telephone a central operator who will book a minicab on their behalf.
TOP TIPS: Stagecoaching is permitted on Capital Call for fares of up to £59, five times the trip subsidy until 31 March 2010. After that it will be reduced to 3 times.
